Montessori, explained simply

Children choose. Adults prepare the path.

Prepared environment

Every material has a place and a purpose. Shelves are low, beauty is intentional, and the room invites concentration.

Mixed ages

Younger children learn by watching. Older children lead. The classroom becomes a small society.

Freedom with limits

Children choose work within a clear, respectful structure. Grace and courtesy are taught as real social skills.

What children actually do

Sensorial and maths materials
  • Practical life — pouring, sweeping, food preparation, dressing, care of the room.
  • Sensorial — refining the senses with classic Montessori materials.
  • Language — spoken English and Portuguese, phonics, writing and reading when the child is ready.
  • Mathematics — quantity, the decimal system and operations through the hands.
  • Culture, art, music, movement and daily time outdoors.

Not a traditional preschool

At Little Oaks

  • Child chooses work from a prepared range
  • Mixed-age community
  • Uninterrupted work cycle
  • Guides observe and present, they do not lecture

Typical early years

  • Same activity for the whole group at the same time
  • Same-age class
  • Frequent transitions and adult-led pace
  • Worksheets and performance pressure
